The US SVS began with a personal and professional passion. The founder, Nick Phelps MS PhD, is s faculty member at the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine, specializing in fisheries sustainability and diagnostic development. He is also an avid fisherman and consumer of seafood. When an investigative report identified significant species substitution in local walleye restaurants, in his home state of Minnesota, he was alarmed. Further research showed seafood mislabeling can range from 25 to more than 70 percent for commonly consumed species. He knew something had to be done. He set out to create a program that improves food safety and consumer confidence, protects exploited fisheries, and maintains seafood market integrity.
The US SVS is the first, and only, organization to offer independent third party certification for seafood species authenticity. This is accomplished with a rapid, accurate, federally-accepted testing method to identify the species of seafood product through a network of trained inspection personnel.
